Why it is important to know the criminal history of the US citizen?
Failure to know about MAJOR crimes committed by the petitioner will show the consular officer a lack of trust or honesty in the relationship. The International Marriage Brokers Regulation ac (see link below) gives the consular officer the legal authority to tell any beneficiary any MAJOR crimes that the petitioner has committed.

Domestic violence includes, sexual assault, child abuse, and neglect, dating violence, elder abuse or stalking.
Other crime USCIS and the embassy are worried about?
Homicide, murder, manslaughter, rape, abusive sexual contact, sexual exploitation, incest (i have seen a petition with this one on it ?? SMH), torture, trafficking, peonage, holding hostage, involuntary servitude, slave trading, kidnapping, abduction, unlawful criminal restraint, false imprisonment or attempt to commit any of these crimes.
If you see a crime up there that you are worried about what to do?
Have him/her go see a lawyer.
These types of cases are not to be handled by people like me and without proper legal advice.
GO SEE A LAWYER.
When they ask if you know about his crimes it is not asking if you know about them it is really asking if he told you and letting you know the truth, so many times the girl does not know the truth.
For example I can tell you 100% for sure, if he is a convicted sex offender and the victim was a minor, they will ask you all about it and you will show them all the information about it and you will know 100% about it, but they will look at you and say thank you, we will consider your visa application and then as soon as you leave they will deny it. and send it back to USCIS, it happens every single time that way.
See this page if there are crimes involving minors.
