Special characters: comma, hyphen, asterisk, foreign-language diacritical marks maybe an issue when filling out online forms DS-260, DS160 or may not be printed on your U.S. visa.
It has also been reported by others that a period (.) can not be entered on the DS-260/ DS-160 for example the name Ma. just shows up as Ma (no period) It is not a concern. The U.S. does not use these in their naming structure so the computers are not setup to take those special characters. below are a few links I found that explain the U.S. governments position on this subject. |
"My name in the visa does not show accent marks. Do I need to have the visa corrected?
No. Accent marks are not transliterated. U.S. visas do not contain accented vowels or the Spanish “ñ.”"

This is from the US state dept instructions on how they fillout and print your visa,
"The data fields do not accept special characters: comma, hyphen, asterisk, foreign-language diacritical marks, etc."
